Building a Ping Pong TableWhat is the correct size?In building a Ping Pong table, you need to understand what makes a good one. Obviously, a 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4" plywood will work. However, that method of building a ping pong table has drawbacks. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) defines a regulation table tennis table as 5 ft (1.525m) wide x 9 ft (2.74m) long and 29.92" (76cm) above the floor. The best table tennis tables have a playing surface of 1" (25mm) or thicker material, although 3/4" (19mm) is acceptable for non-elite play. Would you want a regulation-size ping pong table or a small version? In addition, plywood does not have the bounce. Ping Pong balls bounce differently on various surfaces. The ITTF's regulation on the bounce is "The playing surface shall have a uniform bounce of around 23cm when a standard ball is dropped from a height of 30cm." (paraphrased) Why don't you drop a ball on plywood and see what happens? Listen to the sound. Does the ball bounce 23cm? Does it have a "ping" sound? People do not refer to table tennis as "Thunk" pong. If you are going to the trouble of building a ping pong table, why not make a good one according to the ITTF regulations? You can make a table tennis table that is movable or stationary. If you research commercial Table Tennis tables, you will find they cost as much as $1,000. Why not build your own regulation-size Table Tennis Table and save some money? You will have a lot of gratification when you build your own.
