Tenon Jig Gets Best Rating!

I received this response from Mark after he built the Tenon Jig. He describes the Tenon Jig as superior to any other method. Thanks Mark!
(Message edited for privacy.)

---------------
Hello Jim,
My name is Mark D. (Sydney Australia). I recently purchased your Mortise and Tenon jig plans.

Well I'm happy to report that I completed the Tenon jig over the weekend. It works perfectly!

At the moment, I only have a 20-piece Router bit set, which means I only have one fixed bearing on a rabbet bit. That gives me one fixed shoulder.

I think the hardest part of the Tenon jig will be getting the bearing set!

I must say when I completed a perfect tenon in less than 10-15 seconds,
I just stood there amazed and a smile from ear to ear. I had been playing around with the tablesaw and router table to make tenons, but the Tenon Jig leaves those for dead.

Jim, the only problem that I did have was that in Australia everything is metric. The last time I saw a tape measure with inches and centimeters was a long time ago... all our wood, screws, nuts, bolts, drills etc are in millimeters.
Therefore, when I'm working on the plans, I have a calculator and multiply everything by 2.54 to get to centimeters or millimeters.

If you had a centimeter tenon jig plan, life would be complete!

Thanks Jim
Well done

Cheers Mark D.
Mark, thanks for letting everybody know how much you like the Tenon Jig. Maybe others will take your cue. Do you want to make perfect tenons?
If so, visit the Jigs Page.

Mark, I will use your suggestion and put metric measurements in the next version.

Thanks to everyone for visiting my website!

Best, Jim

Woodworking Plans - Sewing Cabinet

This advice came from a Reader, How to Build a Sewing Cabinet. Here it is:
----------

Word to the wise on making a sewing cabinet:

When using a sewing machine, one's body is in line with the needle and not centered with the machine. Most sewing machine tables do not have enough area under the tabletop. You need to center yourself with the needle and dogfeed of the machine.

If you are a large person, chances are there isn't enough legroom to shift to your left. This contributes to back and neck problems.

There is about 3 1/2" from the needle to the edge of the machine. Making a sewing cabinet that allows the machine to be flush with the top is a wonderful addition.

However, not all machines' sewing surfaces sit at the same height. More folks are getting long-arms. You need to figure, at least, 19-20" for the length. I own a long arm.

Take into consideration where the cords usually plug into the machine. Design the sewing cabinet so that it has an opening for these cords to run down to the floor.

The old common designs for sewing tables were never thought out well. May your design take into consideration the functionality and practicality needed for today's sewers and their machines.

Ideas from Clarissa

----------

Clarissa has some great ideas. Hope to have those in our Readers' Project Page soon.

Thanks for visiting my website!

Come back often for more great ideas!

Hi Jim,

Thank you for the additional information on the router table. The extra drawing did help in my visualization process. I also appreciate the site for the slides. I think that I will order 4 sets of them and use the extra one by putting a pull out shelf in the bottom of the router table thus making it easier to get to things that I might store down there such as extra routers and edge guides.
I think that that would be a beneficial addition/improvement to your already excellent router table plans.
Most folks have pull out shelves under their kitchen sinks and it is something that I will add to my table while I am constructing it.

Have a super day, my friend, and thank you once again.
Sam
